I have to admit I was pretty psyched to have my own LEGO Advent Calendar to open each day until Christmas. I was wondering if I would be happy with the daily mini builds.
As far as today goes, I can definitely say I am happy.
The remote-control race cars are awfully cute. Super easy builds, but not solid sturdy feeling like when you snap two regular bricks together. (You can see my daughter has already seperated the speciality plates while simply playing with the red RC car.) I especially liked the additional color-coded touch of a red and green translucent 1×1 round stud on the remote controls to match the race cars.
As you can see, I’ve already lost my little RC cars to Andrea from the LEGO Friends Advent Calendar.
I may never see these little cars again…
Day 2 – Minifigure Boy with Camera & Pretzel
I was super excited to get my first minifigure today! While this little boy is wearing a plain blue shirt with hood and plain tan legs, he came with 2 cameras and 2 pretzels. My extras were immediately “acquired” by our girl (as you can see in Day 2 of the LEGO Friends Advent Calendar post.)
I’m sure never to be seen again by moi… I suppose I should get used to that.
Day 3 – Side of an Ice Rink with Bucket, Ice Skates & a Pie
You’ll have to forgive the pixelation in my photos. Having issues with my Samsung phone…
This was an interesting little build tonight. It’s the start of a market stall on the edge of an ice pond. I’m just not sure who would be buying a pie and ice skates while already skating on the pond…
Either way, you at least get an extra pair of skates for the minifigure from yesterday. Oh and now you “could put the skates on yesterday’s minifigure and let him skate on the ice! He could fall over, smash his camera and choke on his pretzel” as one reader over on Brickset mentioned in comments.
I really liked today’s build – a hot chocolate kiosk. I think it made a good match with yesterday’s side of an icerink. Especially cute where the cheese slopes used at the top of the kiosk for built-up snow accents.
Didn’t see it until I uploaded the photo to this post, but both pieces make a good beginning to an ice skate rental shack.
Maybe I’ll rebrick them into that for tomorrow’s photo…
12/11/2015 – So you know, by this time I’m in an all out war with my phone and Instagram, so I haven’t been able to successfully upload all of our photos without missing pixels. And the back and forth warring has put me behind on my Advent Calendar post series. I’m officially calling it quits on Instagram until I can get a nondefective phone. For now, I’ll come back to the posts and upload my photos directly to the blog…)
Once again, I’m super happy with the build for today – a blue and white biplane. My only issue with it is when you place it side by side with a minfigure – this just isn’t minifigure size. It’s way to large for them to hold it.
Maybe I’ll modify it and make a a remote control biplane for my minifigures…
Andrea is clearly not being nice as she modified today’s calendar build – the wind up bulldozer – into a remote control terrorrizer to chase our new friend who we’ll call Timmy.
Timmy is so scared, he lost all his freckles!
We love this little bulldozer. Super easy to visualize what it is in its micro state. Excellent build and we give it a thumbs up.
On Day 7, we got another minifigure kid… This time, he seems a little bit older than the one we got Day 2. He comes with a cell phone and a snowball. I wonder what mischeif he’s up to. But if he’s like any of the teenagers I know, he’s probably taking a selfie with that snowball.
I’m happy with the minifigure. Thumbs up here.
The Day 8 build was great! We got an old-timey lamp post with an attached wreath. It looks great with the short legged minifigures… probably a little short for the regular sized minifigures, but still cute none-the-less.
We’ll be adding this little build to our winter village MOC. Big thumbs up!
I *love* this chair from the Day 9 build of the advent calendar. Clearly it’s meant for Santa Claus, which we probably won’t get until later days. Regardless, we’re super inspired to build a better chair for the portrait Santa in our winter village MOC.
Super happy with this build. Thumbs up.
Again, LEGO made a hit for us with this Christmas tree build from Day 10 of the advent calendar. We liked the gold and silver studs used for decoration and the unique piece for the base of the tree stand.
Great build. Thumbs up!
Day 11 – Standing Street Clock
A great match to Day 8’s street lamp, the street lamp is a lovely addition. I’m not a fan of the backer for the lamp face, but it’s not a deal breaker for the design. I think a variation of it will fit in well with the winter village.
I seem to be repurposing a ton into the winter village…
We’ve had such a great streak of excellent advent calendar days, so it was just a matter of time before we ran into a humdrum build. The gifts are a great accessory for minifigures and the Christmas tree, but they are just another filler build… one that’s been seen in almost all previous years.
Not thumbs up, but not thumbs down either.
A standard in the last three LEGO City Advent Calendars, the criminal minifigure is far from a new item in this year’s advent calendar. Fortunately, this criminal looks like he came from the LEGO City Swamp line of products, with his rope belt and what I can assume to be crocodile teeth necklace.
I’m always a fan of minifigures. The more, the merrier. Thumbs up.
Such an awesome little build! The train locomotive features 2×2 wheel type parts I haven’t seen before. They roll quiet excellent in this build and with a hitch on the back of the build, I’m excited to see what comes in the following builds.
Can’t wait to add this to our winter village build. Big thumbs up!
Yes! I was hoping to get a second part of the train, but I wasn’t expecting to get it so soon! The ball snaps in nicely on to the hitch and the train makes lovely turns. And just like on the box, it all looks wonderful with the gifts on top.
Again, I’m a happy camper with this build. Woot!
Wherever there’s a robber, you need a cop! And that’s exactly what we got… specifically a Swamp Police Officer. We haven’t picked up any of the swamp sets, so this will be fun to play with for a bit.
I really enjoyed this snowspeeder build. I’m not sure I’ve ever built a snowspeeder this small, but it works well for the minifigures. I may make a few of these to create a rental shop for our Winter Village MOC.
Big thumbs up.
Day 18 – Husky, Bowl and Bones
Today’s box opened up the ever super cute husky along with a dog bowl filled with 2 bones. These aren’t that easy to come by, unless you picked them up from the last 3 year’s advent calendars or in one of the LEGO City Arctic sets.
As a matter of fact, I bought a set of 6 for the husband as a stocking stuffer last year. Paid a pretty penny for them, too. Glad to get one in this year’s calendar.
We love it!
This minifigure girl is almost a perfect match for the girl, so you know I was super happy with it. I’m planning on switching out the hair and bringing her along with me for some candid shots.
Yay! We finally got a snowman! This is one of the regular builds in the advent calendars every year, but it hardly seems like Christmas without one. Plus, a snowman gives you so many play opportunities, the repeat build from year to year can be forgiven.
Amywho…who needs Mr. and Mrs. Claus when you have Mr. and Mrs. Snowman?
Day 21 – Fire Pit & Marshmallows on Sticks
While today’s build was done in 5 seconds flat (not much to build there), it does have a ton of play opportunities surrounding it. The firepit is rather nice and the unique cross piece gets the point across. The marshmallows on a stick are nothing new, but fun to see in the calendar.
I’m surprised our LEGO Friends Advent Calendar girls went camping… after all, they just came back from the salon apparently…
Today’s build was just okay. I’m assuming it was a rocket, but it feels a bit… unfinished. Maybe I’m overthinking it. I’m hoping tomorrow “completes” this build…
As I expected, yesterday’s build was just “part 1” of a 2-part build. As standalone rockets, they were lack luster, but in conjunction with the space shuttle from today’s build, it is a very impressive design.
Very happy with the build!
Last day of the LEGO City Advent Calendar and we get… tada tada! Santa Claus! He looks awesome on the chair we got earlier this advent calendar. We’ll be adding him to our Winter Village build this year.
And with that, the 2015 LEGO City Advent Calendar is done!
Come back and check this post for later days of the LEGO City Advent Calendar!
