Struggling with LEGO Winter Village Storage?

This post may contain affiliate links. Here is our disclosure statement.

You’re not alone as you wouldn’t be the only one struggling with LEGO Winter Village storage. Each year, I see plenty of posts from new LEGO lovers asking how people pack away their stets. And each year, we also struggle with packing away our build with new sets we purchased throughout the year when we had just enough space to pack the year before. But if you’re like us, you’ve been buying new additions throughout the year, to include the latest Winter Village set, and have already found yourself out of space.

So while I provided the following tips on storage in another post:

  1. You’ll always need 1 more storage box than you think.
  2. Make sure you have packing material.
  3. Don’t be afraid to leave some space empty.
  4. Expect to put some stuff back together… at least partially.
  5. Don’t expect it to fit in the same way you took it out.

And I’ve also provided links to storage solutions on Amazon, I realized it would probably be helpful to re-visit and share some additional storage techniques with you all.

Let’s face it – these sets are pretty special and definitely need more care than just tossing them in a box. (We learned that lesson the hard way with our first foray into Winter Village building!)

So, what’s working for us? Let me share some additional techniques that might help you, too…

Clear Storage Bins Are Your Friend

LEGO winter village storage bins

First off, clear storage bins are absolute game-changers! You can actually see what’s inside without opening every single box. I especially love the ones with snap-on lids because they keep dust out and all those tiny pieces safely inside.

As a matter of fact, the ones in the above picture are the exact Sterilite 160 Qt Wheeled Storage Box Infra Red ones we purchased from Walmart a few years ago.

Sort By Building vs. Accessories

Here’s something that’s really been working for us – we separate the main buildings from all those adorable accessories. The buildings go in larger bins, while Ziploc style bags work perfectly for things like:

  • Christmas trees
  • Lamp posts
  • Market stalls
  • Minifigures

We recommend the Waterproof Zip Up Style Pouches found on Amazon for all the smaller pieces and scenes. They hold up better than actual Ziploc bags.

Label Everything!

Okay, this might sound obvious, but trust me – labels are lifesavers! I write both the set number and name on each container. So when I’m looking for that specific Christmas tree from the Winter Village Market, I know exactly where to find it.

Well, this one worked for us when we last reworked the Winter Village. We used a system where we created a grid of the layout and then numbered each baseplate so we knew exactly where to position it the next time we needed to set it up. Helped us do it quickly the year it worked.

Unfortunately, the following year we decided to expand again which lead to us switching the layout. If you don’t expand much or at all, this would definitely work for you!

Storage Location Matters

Finally, let’s talk about where to keep everything. We learned (unfortunately) that garages (and attics) aren’t great – the temperature changes can actually affect the bricks over time dependent on where they are stored. A closet or basement storage area works much better for your LEGO Winter Village storage needs.
